I am 34 yrs old. I am going to oc next week with my wife and 1 yr old. We will be joined by my sister and brother in law (also in 30%26#39;s). My brother in law just got a DUI in Pennsylvania and is on probation, so can not get in any kind of trouble with the law.. He%26#39;s afraid to drink some beers on the beach in oc. I told him if we use can coolers we should be ok. Remember we will be with our wives who wont drink and a 1 yr old. So its not like we will be partying on the beach . Just having some beers. Any advise?
drinking on the beach?';Any advise?';
Yea, don%26#39;t drink on the beach.
drinking on the beach?thats the obvious answer, but are the cops strict about drinking on the beach? Do they go looking foir it?
The cops are very strict about it. Plus it%26#39;s posted on every lifeguard chair- NO ALCOHOL
I%26#39;d play it safe and have your beer at a bar or in your room/balcony. Your brother in law really doesn%26#39;t need to be getting into anymore trouble.
I%26#39;d say to check out Seacrets because you can drink on the beach or while laying out on rafts. The wives could have lunch or something with the 1 year old while the boys hang out tilting back cold ones.
I would advise against it.. But I don%26#39;t really remember seeing beach patrolers going up and down the beach to check. Maybe a few times during the hours we were laying out on the beach they would drive by in their ATVs or trucks but kind of fast... Don%26#39;t remember seeing them ever actually LOOKING.
';He%26#39;s afraid to drink some beers on the beach in oc.';
If I had just gotten a DUI, I%26#39;d be seriously evaluating my drinking in general terms. When the focus of the conversation so soon after getting a DUI is how to get away with more illegal alcohol-induced behavior, there%26#39;s a better place for your BIL to visit than OC. It%26#39;s called a ';rehab center.';
';I told him if we use can coolers we should be ok.';
That%26#39;s exactly the sort of support somebody with an alcohol problem needs. Is that your professional legal opinion?
As others have stated, your brother-in-law obviously has some issues with alcohol if he got busted for DUI. You should be finding ways to help him get a better handle on his drinking issues rather than promoting them.
With that said...there are several areas in front of a few major hotels that do allow drinking on the beach as long as you purchase the alcohol from the hotel. Castle in the Sand immediately comes to mind. The old Ocean Club on 49th St. used to do the same thing. I believe it%26#39;s also possible at the Princess Royale and The Clarion. Don%26#39;t ask me what laws and regulations allow these hotels to do this, as I never figured it out either.
At Castle in the Sand, you can either walk up to the bar located on the other side of the sand dunes and get the drinks yourself and take them back to your spot on the beach or you can wait for a waitress to come around and take your order. Also, the area is marked by two signs, one on either side of the beach where drinking is allowed (usually the beach area immediately in front of the hotel). And as far as I know, you don%26#39;t have to be staying at the hotel. I have been doing this with friends and family for years now and have never stayed at the hotel. And everyone seems to be very cool with it...I%26#39;ve never witnessed people getting so drunk at these locations that they started to become obnoxious and out of control. It%26#39;s nice to be able to have a frosty, tropical cocktail or two while watching the waves and relaxing on the beach.
everyone is over reacting to the drinking problem. My brother in law got a dui because he was unfortunate. I%26#39;m not saying its ok to drive after drinking. Please dont misunderstand me. But we all have done it, whether its after a wedding, out for dinner or just leaving a bar after 2 or 3 drinks. It doesnt take much for a 170 lb person in pennsylvania to be legally drunk. a few drinks and supossely no headlights on (thats what the cop said) did him in. He in no way has a drinking problem (rehab?) Now I know your thinking that he must first realize he has a problem before he can fix it. That%26#39;s Bull ----! So We both like to have some beers relaxing on the weekends watching a game, going out for pizza or dinner, or at a happy hour after work with our wives. We both hold full time jobs and are happily married. In no way does alcohol run my life. (rehab?) So what if we want to take a week off from work, sit on the beach with our families and have a few beers while looking at the great views. Pardon me , but if you think that is unusual or ';having a problem';, then you dont know any real alcoholics. Well, back to my original post: We have done it before and nobody has ever bothered us. As a matter of fact, we had corona bottles one time, and the umbrella and chair guy just asked us to never bring bottles on the beach again (HE could cut his feet). I was just wondering if things have changed in the last couple of years. Do the cops go looking for it?
I have had a beer on the beach and never thought twice about it.
Discretion is always wise. I think it also matters what part of the beach you are on. I stay in the low 100%26#39;s in the condo area. This area probably gets less scrutiny than down by the boardwalk.
';real alcoholics.'; What are those? The falling down drunks you find lying in gutters?
Don%26#39;t have to be a ';real alcoholic'; to have a problem.
You are not unfortunate if you get a DUI you broke the law.
Whether you were driving with your headlights on, off or in between.
And it seems you and your brother in law haven%26#39;t learned anything.
He has a DUI and here you are asking how to get around breaking another drinking law without the risk of suffering any consequences.
So he is on probation but his ';NEED'; to have a few beers when this is illegal just can%26#39;t be controlled.
If he is afraid as you suggest perhaps you should consider supporting his fear and not putting him into a position where he might dig a deeper hole for himself, his wife and family.
Drinking and driving is illlegal for a reason. Once you are arrested for that offense especially in your 30%26#39;s,that should be a wake up call for you to check your actions.
Many years ago I was involved in a car accident with a drunk. Just a few beers for him in the afternoon and then he got behind the wheel. Perhaps you might want to consider your brother in law lucky that he was not involved in an accident and rather got away with just a DUI charge.
Hard to figure a few beers is worth it..........
i am in no way supporting drinking and driving. It%26#39;s terrible and I agree with all of the strict laws. No one should lose their life to a drunk driver. All i am saying is that we have all done it at at least once at some point in our lives and most of us were lucky enough not to get caught. Think about it. Since you were 21, the law allows you to go out to a bar, restaurant, or club to drink. Do you really think every person who has a few glasses of wine for dinner has a designated driver? And dont care what anyone say, I believe wanting a few beers (or frozen drinks) on the beach while on vacation is quite ';normal';. We dont swim in the ocean (too cold and dirty), we dont get loud and obnoxious, we just want to relax on vacation. Drinking and driving and drinking and beaching are two different things. This post had nothing to do with me conconing drinking and driving. Stop turniong it into that. If ocean city maryland closed all of their beer stores and bars, they would lose over half of their visitors. Lets face it.
