We are visiting OC in October and realize some activities may be closed for the year. Are there any side trips around there that one can do in a day? We love historical places, ocean activities, historical tours, scenic drives, etc. Hopefully, we%26#39;ll be able to see some of the leaf color or will mid-October be too late? Actually, we even love movies since we don%26#39;t get much time to do that at home. Is there a movie theater?
Day Trips
Asseateague Island is very close by Ocean City. It is a national park right on the beach with wild ponies. Chicoteague in Virginia is a continuation of the park. You can%26#39;t get through from Maryland. However, the little town of Chicoteague is interesting for a day trip.
Asseateague is about a ten minute drive at most and Chicoteague is less than an hour. You pass one of the NASA museums on the way which makes an interesting stop.
Have fun.
Day Trips
Actually, mid-October might be a little too early to see the leaves changing. I%26#39;ve noticed around the first two weeks in November is when the leaves seem to be at their prime after living in this area for the last 7 years. Of course, it%26#39;s nothing like seeing the leaves change in a more mountainous area. The Delmarva Peninsula is very flat, especially near the coast. There just aren%26#39;t any stunning overlooks like you have in the mountains.
As for day trips, you can also venture about 30 minutes north up the coast to Rehobeth Beach and Bethany Beach in Delaware. These towns are a little more quaint around the main ';downtown'; areas. Also, try visiting Berlin, MD. The town has done a great job of keeping the downtown area looking like it did at the turn of the last century. It%26#39;s where the movie Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere was filmed. Speaking of movies there are 3 movie theaters in the OC area.
You can also day trip over to the Salisbury, MD area, about 30 miles to the west of OC. The Salisbury Zoo and the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art are located over there and both are free.
You could try going to Historic Berlin which is like 10 minutes from Ocean City. The movie Tuck Everlasting was filmed there too. There are 3 movie theaters in the area. I know there is one right next to the Gold Coast Mall.
If you like shopping, visit the Ocean City Factory Outlets in West Ocean City. If you drive about 20-30min north you%26#39;ll be in Rehoboth Beach and you could visit the Tanger Outlets.
You could also visit Assateague Island which is about a 20-30min drive.
Thanks to each of you for the suggestions--I added them to my growing file labeled Ocean City. You guys are ';da best';!
