Can anyone tell me if Ocean City,Md has any ';seedy'; sections to avoid? My family is used to staying in peaceful, clean Wildwood Crest, NJ (in an oceanfront hotel) and going onto the boardwalk in Wildwood for entertainment. We are very strongly considering giving Ocean City a try this year for a change. I am leaning toward staying at the Hilton Suites Oceanfront Hotel on 33rd st. How is that section? Is it anything like ';North Wildwood'; in Jersey?(which is a bit seedy)
Also, I read the forums about the Hilton Suites Hotel, most of them written back in May when the hotel just openned. Has anybody been there since then? Has their housekeeping and overall efficiancy improved since Memorial Day? I%26#39;m thinking some of the problems forum writers experienced sounded like the hotel may not have had enough housekeeping staff when they openned. We were also considering the Holiday Inn on 17th and the boardwalk (which got a majority of rave reviews from forum travelers), but I don%26#39;t know about staying on the Boardwalk. In Jersey, that is something we would avoid, what about in Ocean City?
Appreciate any help you can give to someone traveling for the 1st time to Ocean City.
*Footnote: I%26#39;m traveling from 8/30-9/4 (long Labor Day weekend) with a husband, a teenage boy, a teenage girl, and a pre-teen boy.And I might add, the teenagers are not easy to please.
Thanks

I am a Marylander and visit Ocean City every year, sometimes twice. Ironically, we went to Avalon, NJ over Memorial Day and visited Wildwood while there, so I can give you some real comparisons.
Ocean City does not have ';seedy'; areas at all. There are some older and low-rent homes on the bayside, but not near the boardwalk/oceanside area.
My only caution about staying on the boardwalk (or any street below 40th street) is that the younger partying crowd tends to gravitate towards there. Especially at the inlet area where the older apartments are (although the rent is still fairly pricey in this section, they just allow tenants under 25 to rent). A lot of schools will be back in session during your week though, so you may avoid the nightlife crowd. Also, having teenagers, this may not even bother you.
Frankly, I wasn%26#39;t terribly impressed with Wildwood, and I can picture the neighborhoods that you labeled as ';seedy';. Throughout our Jersey shore stay we really liked Avalon the best, Sea Isle City was nice too.
The beach at Ocean City is spectacular, very clean and very well maintained sand. The shoreline doesn%26#39;t give up as many seashells and other fun artifacts that I found in NJ.
I%26#39;ve never been to the hotel that you speak of. I%26#39;ve been to O.C. every year since I was 5 and we%26#39;ve always rented a condominium. It%26#39;s a better deal price-wise (we%26#39;re staying from 9/3-9/10 this year for $1000 for the week) and we don%26#39;t have to eat out all the time.
Give MD a try, you%26#39;ll enjoy it!

Mrs Maryland....are u out there? Did you read the nice things cc wrote about Ocean City??? Or are u still in the Krispy Kreme drive thru???
CC17741, Actually, I am not at the Krispy Kreme. And I still don%26#39;t like Ocean City. I know I am on an Ocean City forum but it%26#39;s for the good, bad, and the ugly, people have a right to know how everyone/anyone thinks of a place that they are going to spend their hard earned money and time.
I have lived in Maryland all of my life and the first time I went to Ocean city was not a pleasant one. There aren%26#39;t many activities (that my family enjoys-not anyone else%26#39;s-my family) I am very particular about where I spend my money.
I won%26#39;t except mediocrity when I am paying someone $300.00 p/night for a room that has other human hair on my bed sheets, blood stained sheets, cigarette holes in the carpet, a bathroom shower that the curtains are just too nasty to describe. Then having to drive to EVERYWHERE TO SEE NOTHING. It just wasn%26#39;t entertaining to me.
It just seems to be a litte out of touch with today. The hotel prices are extremley high for rooms that aren%26#39;t well maintained. OC is lacking in entertainment (other than maybe one water park, a few things here and there)
I will say the best thing about OC is the food. But I can get that anywhere in Maryland/DC/VA and not have to drive 3 hours to get there. OC isn%26#39;t for everybody. I think it%26#39;s more for a younger crowd (teenagers, and singles). I have never seen OC on anyone%26#39;s list for best ';FAMILY BEACHES IN AMERICA'; Maybe 30-50 years ago but not today.
To add to cc beans response- with teenagers you may prefer to stay on the boardwalk. It %26#39;s absolutely safe for them to walk up and down the whole length of the boardwalk unattended. They would love it. Truthfully- there are no areas I would call seedy or I would be afraid to walk to. The boardwalk ends on 28th [ I think} The other areas are fine also. You would be OK either way
To respond to MrsMaryland:
Did you know Ocean City won an All-America City award in 2001?

According to the Travel Channel, Ocean City%26#39;s boardwalk ranks #3 in the nation while your beloved Myrtle Beach%26#39;s ranks #6.
…discovery.com/fansites/…boardwalk.html
And you keep saying you one and only visit was in March? Ocean City is no way in it%26#39;s prime during the month of March. To be fair, you have to be there between May and September when everything is OPEN.
If I visited Myrtle Beach during a hurricane, and then said I had a crappy time and there was nothing to do, trash and debris everywhere, would that be fair??? Point being you didn%26#39;t visit OC in its prime. You posting a topic in this forum ';Horrible time in Ocean City'; is not fair if you only visited it once in MARCH.
In response to MINK 66:
Actually, I%26#39;ve visited on a number of times when family and friends have stayed there, but I have only stayed over night once. I am more than free to have my opinion. TO EACH HIS OWN. SO what about what they said about the BOARDWALK 5 YEARS AGO (MB is over 60 miles long so that would be a pretty big Boardwalk).
I did say that I liked the boardwalk of OC (the food, the walk along the beach) but other than that, that was it FOR ME. Who are you or anyone else to tell me what I should like about OC or what I can or can not say about the place. And I am not the only one who doesn%26#39;t like Ocean City and I love MB but there are people who don%26#39;t like MB. I do however feel that everyone should know the good, the bad, and the ugly of OC or MB (It%26#39;s not perfect but it%26#39;s the right place for me) How arrogant of you MINK 66 or CC whatever, dare tell me I shouldn%26#39;t say such bad things about your precious OC............boo hoo hoo!!!
Get a grip. You stick with OC and I will stick with MB. I gave this forum a try simply to see if I could change my mind about the place. And find out what people thought was so good about it. But if there are people like the nasty rude people on this forum there in OC no wonder why I didn%26#39;t like the place. Oh, and I still didn%26#39;t find out what was so interesting about OC, that I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN.
That%26#39;s the end of that, so say what you will. GOODBYE!!!!!
Don%26#39;t quote my name in your spew of disdain and nonsense when I never directed any of my comments to you MrsMaryland.
I think it%26#39;s utterly unfair to complain of poor housekeeping in a single hotel as a reason not to visit someplace. Not to visit that hotel, sure, but the whole city? No way. Why don%26#39;t you provide some real help and tell us the name of the hotel so others can avoid it?
As I said in my post, my family always rents condos, usually through Coldwell Banker, and have never had a problem.
Ocean City is a great place with plenty of water sports, beach activities, local shopping, restaurants, tidepool exploring, nightlife, etc etc.
As for the teenagers, I completely agree with the previous poster that it is safe for teens to stroll up and down the entire boardwalk on their own. I did it myself some 16 years ago when I was a teen, and I%26#39;d let my teen do it as well.
Good luck, let us know what you decide on.
CC BEAN,
Do not take any offense to the comments made by ';Maryland';...I am also a CC so I am sure her remarks were directed toward me.
Sorry.
While Ocean City is as safe as any resort town, I%26#39;d personally stay away from much of the bayside of 28th street and around 14th street bayside. That area used to be notorious for hookers and drug deals, but they%26#39;ve recently torn down the nasty old motel that was there and put up large, plush new condos -- don%26#39;t know how that%26#39;s affected the street. Oceanside is always a safe bet and bayside above the boardwalk is better in my opinion.

ocmdbeachrentals.com ... now taking you to the Caribbean too!
Maryland, please stay in MB. We are all alot safer.
New York, i live in Jersey and have been down to the shore many times. When my wife and i went back to ocmd we decided this is the cleanest and safest beach.
So many fun things to do and relaxing at the same time with great food.
Give it a try......I think you will like it.
