have never been to either - looking for advice - we are a couple who are looking for a casual place near beach. have been to montauk, maine and rhode island - loved them all but wanted a change and have more time off to go further than we usually do
thanks
ocean city vs rehoboth
Duck:
I%26#39;ve been going to OC for over 30 years from NY.
Well worth the trip.
Ocean City is a much larger area then Rehobeth.
There are many more places to stay and for me lots more to do.
At the same time OC can be crowded and busy depending on when you plan to visit.
Rehobeth is a little quieter, has several nice places to eat but on a smaller scale.
Depending on your taste and what you enjoy either would make for a nice trip or one area might suit your needs better.
It would be my suggestion that you stay in OC and perhaps make a day trip up to Rehobeth and check that area out for future visits.
Really not a long ride between the two areas.
Rehobeth also has some tax free outlet stores in case shopping is on your list of things to do on vacation.
One suggestion you could travel down the Garden State Parkway to Cape May that%26#39;s a nice area and then take the Cape May-Lewes Ferry which will let you pass through Rehobeth on your way to OC.
When were you planning to travel?
How long were you planning to stay?
Weekday or weekend?
If I can be of any furhther assistance please just ask.
Have a safe and enjoyable trip.
ocean city vs rehoboth
thanks for your answers. we are looking to come down in august for about a week. how far is rehoboth from ocean city. i don%26#39;t know much about either place. heard things about both but that was years ago and i know that places change. we wanted a place that had nice beaches, could stay close to beach, eat on beach(can you in either place), safe and nice to walk around, good places to eat. just needed a relaxing place - casual dress.
OC is very casual for sightseeing and eating out.
You have places to eat that run the entire range from fast food to fine dining.
All depends on your taste and what you enjoy.
OC in August will be crowded and busy for the most part.
In most cases the distance from bay to ocean is around four blocks so you are near the beach or at least in walking distance no matter where you stay.
What part of NY do you come from?
That has nothing to do with your trip just curious.
duckyny,
OC and Rehoboth are remarkably dissimilar. Rehoboth is a small town...full year round, and behaves and looks like a small town. Bookstores and small boutiques exist and flourish on Rehoboth Avenue, the main street....The town is mostly houses...although over the past few years, the character has changed somewhat as many have renovated cottages into beach palaces. The main highway is insane...traffic wise and franchise food/outlet wise, but you can avoid all of that in Rehoboth...Just north of Rehoboth is Henlopen Acres...a beautiful upscale town of nice houses. Just south is Dewey beach...more of a party town...but with low rises and a very wide beach...it seems less crowded, even in the middle of summer. Rehoboth is also quite gay friendly...and Delaware has no sales tax.
OC is a long narrow spit of land featuring lines of highrises. Most of OC becomes deserted in winter...It is much more a summer playground type place.
Both have boardwalks...OC%26#39;s is much longer and full of beach stores, salt water taffy and arcades etc. Trimper%26#39;s, at the southern end of the OC boardwalk is a must if you wish to do the amusement park thing...
Ocean City is a bigger town. You have a lot more to do there and a lot more to eat. You got pizza places, sub shops, seafood, italian, mexican, chinese, fast food, everything. For things to do, you got the Ocean City Factory Outlets, but Rehoboth has the bigger outlets. You have waterparks and amusement parks, mini-golf and golf courses, lots more shopping, fishing, crabbing, parasailing, jet-skiing, go-karts, I could go on and on. The boardwalk in Ocean City is bigger and you got a lot more to do. Rehoboth Beach has a lot of houses/cottages and is much more quieter.
If you enjoy the more sophisticated coastal villages and towns in New England, then I would steer you to Rehoboth Beach. (We lived In New England). My husband and I really did not like Ocean City. I know that it is a generational destination place for people who live in the Mid-Atlantic and they love it, but it just wasn%26#39;t for us.
It is over commercialized, tacky, and overcrowded. Granted Rehoboth may be crowded too, but it just had more character, some great restaurants, and convenient proximity to less crowded state parks and beautiful coastal areas. Consider Lewes, DE too. It is very close to Rehoboth and is more like a miniature Nantucket.
agree with the above poster...i think you%26#39;d like rehoboth better.
all the types of restaurants mentioned by ocbeach are abundant in rehoboth, as well.
