driving down on a friday night

hi all. we%26#39;ll be leaving for OC this coming friday at around 4 o%26#39;clock pm. i realize that we%26#39;ll hit terrible traffic, but how long do you estimate it to take us? also, are there any tips to make it a shorter trip? thanks

Driving straight through, with no stops other than traffic--my guess is (from where US 50 and the Beltway meet): 5.5 hours. The combination of weekend getaway and normal afternoon rush hour traffic is a killer.

The only way to make for a shorter trip on a Friday is to leave a lot earlier--like by 9 a.m.--or a lot later than 4 pm. We%26#39;ll typically leave around 8:00 on a Friday night to make it in three hours after a nice, relaxing dinner at home.

For us, there%26#39;s not a whole lot of difference--with little kids--between arriving at 9:30 on a Friday night (leaving at 4) or arriving at 11:30 (leaving at 8). Either way, the kids are asleep and it%26#39;s too late to do much of anything by the time you arrive.

We are leaving Friday night sort of too, more like 3am. It will take us approximately 6 hours from Pittsburgh, so we should arrive by 9am. We are doing the trip this way because we still want the day at the beach, cant check in until 3 pm on Sat, and want to avoid all traffic! Have a safe and fun trip!!

We also leave around 3:30 a.m. from Pgh to avoid the traffic jam on the chesapeak bridge. If you get there before 8-8:30 a.m. you%26#39;re good to go. WE get to O.C. by 10:30. We make 2 stops, one for breakfast in Breezewood and then again after we get over the bridge for a bathroom break. This way we have the whole day in O.C.

from DC with the afternoon traffic it%26#39;s a hit or miss. You could make it in 3 hrs too 5 hrs.

this is all what i%26#39;ve expected. i really want to get there just so that i have friday night (assuming i%26#39;d get there at around 9), but it might not be worth all the traffic. i%26#39;m also considering leaving at around 5am saturday....
